1850s Dress

Large 1850 Ballgown inspired by fashion plates of the time.

Made during Diploma of Live Performance & Technical Services Costume Specialisations

Inspired by fashion plates of women at dances in the 19th century, this gown displays the large bell shaped skirts and layers of decorations in fashion during that time. The princess seam bodice is adorned with a satin bertha, which has meticulously draped organdy, pinned in place by lace and fabric flowers which I individually made. The crinoline was an era defining fashion, so great attention was given to the accuracy of this feature, including following historic patterns to create a 3 meter circumference with the correct silhouette  which took 8 hours to hand sew. The box pleated skirt is decorated with netting mirroring the bodice, held in place by handmade satin bows.

Materials: satin, organdy, lace, handmade flowers, cotton drill, calico, boning
